Top 4 Kitchen Upgrades

Any homeowner or interior designer will tell you, “kitchens and bathrooms make a home.” It’s no surprise, as most of us spend plenty of time in both spaces. Many even consider the kitchen “the heart of the home.” So, when you’re considering upgrades in and around the house make sure to keep these two areas at the top of the list! From countertops, appliances, flooring, back splashes, faucets and more, there are plenty of amazing things that can be done to make your kitchen all the more inviting.

Homes Heart is all about designing the right space for our client’s lifestyle and personality. Here are four upgrades to consider if you’re remodeling the kitchen—or just looking to improve its form, function, and feel.

High-End Appliances

If you’ve ever watched home buying programs such as HGTV’s House Hunters, you know that everyone “ooos” and “ahhhs” at stainless steel appliances – especially if they are high-end. While costs of appliances can become significant, they offer long term rewards. Not only will updated appliances improve the overall look and feel of your kitchen, modern appliances are designed for long term use. That means it will be quite awhile before they need replacing. Additionally, modern technology allows us to enjoy our appliances like never before. Touch screen refrigerators, self-ventilating stovetops and smart-phone controlled dishwashers are just a few advancements.

Countertops

Countertops are often the first thing guests notice when walking into a kitchen. Therefore, investing in an attractive, resistant and durable countertop material is an undeniable upgrade. Granite is an insanely popular choice, with quartz quickly climbing the charts. The staff at Homes Heart absolutely loves helping clients choose the right countertop, assessing both functionality and personal vision.

Hardware

Hardware is like jewelry for kitchens. Cabinetry hardware will not only dress up cabinets but add an interesting architectural element to any kitchen. Whether replacing or adding hardware for the first time, cabinetry hardware is an inexpensive way to update any kitchen. There are thousands of hardware options to choose from, and Homes Heart looks forward to helping you choose the hardware that blends seamlessly with your kitchen.

Backsplash

Another huge kitchen upgrade is the backsplash. Whether your current backsplash is completely non-existent or filled with old, outdated tile, removing it and replacing it with something that fits both the times and your design style is easy. Not sure what you’re looking for? The staff at Homes Heart will help you choose a tile that is both classic and timeless, and of course, represents your personal style.

Tip: Consider both the present and future when choosing a backsplash. Ask yourself, is this a design I will be happy with for the next 5-10 years? Will it appeal to homebuyers in the event I sell my home? Choosing a classic, neutral tile will allow room for layering in colorful kitchen accessories.

We hope these upgrades have helped you get an idea of what your kitchen remodel will look like! Home Heart is always ready and willing to help our clients take their home remodeling projects to the next level. Interested? Contact us for a free consultation.

Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets are top of mind when considering a kitchen remodel, and it’s easy to understand why. Cabinets are the main focus of a kitchen, and are essential to the kitchen’s functionality. Most importantly, cabinets account for roughly 60 percent of a remodeling budget. So, it is important to consider your options carefully and choose the right cabinets for your space.

Homes Heart is all about designing the right space for our clients’ unique lifestyle and personality. Follow our tips on how to choose the right cabinets for your kitchen remodel.

Materials:

Wood may seem like the only choice, but other materials like metal, thermofoil, stainless steel, and melamine also work. Your personal style and existing home decor theme will help us determine the best material for your kitchen cabinet remodel.

Style:

Whether it be traditional, country or modern, a door style exists for every taste. Homes Heart specializes in all types of kitchen cabinetry, and can custom design the perfect style for your home. Ask us about detailed woodwork or an untouched look.

Function:

Before choosing cabinets for your kitchen remodel, ask yourself how you want the space to function. Do you need ample space for small appliances, dinnerware and other household items? Or are you seeking simplicity? The designers at Homes Heart are experienced in helping clients choose cabinetry of all kinds. We will discuss your kitchen goals in detail to help you make the best choice for your unique style and needs.

Hardware:

Hardware can have a big impact on the final look of your cabinets. It can dress them up, dress them down, make them more contemporary or more traditional, and of course increase functionality. Homes Heart has a variety of cabinetry hardware to view in our local showroom. Tell us what you’re looking for and we will guide you in the right direction.

Dos and Dont’s of Kitchen Remodeling

A kitchen remodel is one of the best ways to improve your home’s interior, functionality and value. Luckily, Homes Heart specializes in just that! From luxurious retreats, gourmet oases to functionality for the whole family the staff at Homes Heart has done it all! Take the following dos and don’ts into consideration before starting on your kitchen remodel.

Do your research

Before meeting with a contractor or interior designer, scope out ideas on Pinterest or Houzz that match your vision of the ideal kitchen. Consider the layout, appliances, functionality, finishes and color scheme. Save these ideas on your phone, tablet or laptop and bring them with when consulting with your designer. Another helpful research tool are lists. Make a list of “must haves,” “would be nice to have” and “some day” to prioritize what is most important.

Do make a budget

Tell your designer what your kitchen remodel goals are to determine a ballpark cost. Once you have an idea of the total it will be easier to establish a set budget. Keep in mind that there is always a chance of unforeseen expenses, so we recommend setting aside 10% of the budget to cover any surprises.

Do maximize the space

Homes Heart is all about making the space we have both beautiful and functional. Make the most of your kitchen remodel and take advantage of every square inch. This is especially important with smaller kitchens. Even if you’re not adding square footage, you can still gain space with a proper design. Consider extending cabinets to the ceiling, add a built in pantry or turn a corner space into a built in seating area.

Don’t rush the planning & design

It’s likely that you don’t remodel your kitchen every few years, so take your time with the planning to make it just right. While your instincts will want to quickly transition to the construction phase, it’s important to spend time visualizing the layout, design and features. The last thing you want to do is make a quick decision that doesn’t make sense in the end. But don’t worry! The staff at Homes Heart will walk you through every detail to keep the project on track.

Don’t skip the technical stuff

Where are the water lines? Where is the plumping? Where are the electrical outlets? When visualizing your new kitchen, it’s important to consider the technical details to determine the best location for things like the sink, refrigerator, windows and doors.

Homes Heart takes pride in turning our client’s vision into reality. Whether you have an idea of what you’re looking for or have not a clue where to start, we work with you from start to finish. Announcement of Office Relocation

Homes Heart is pleased to announce that we have moved to a new office! The new space is located at:

407 E. Terra Cotta Avenue, Unit D
Crystal Lake, IL 60014

We will continue to use our present telephone number:

815-355-3049

We spent the past few years in a building less than 3 miles from our new location. And while we made great memories (and bathrooms and kitchens) there, we couldn’t be more excited about our new space. We’re confident the new development will enable Homes Heart to accommodate its clients more efficiently and effectively.

Our new office is housed in a small business development with a full parking lot for employees and clients alike. Just minutes from the heart of Downtown Crystal Lake, clients will enjoy the easy-to-find location and friendly neighbors.

It has been an exciting 12 years for Homes Heart, and we look at this new location as the start of another chapter in our history. We are still working on getting settled in, but we’re incredibly happy to be in the new space. We will be hosting an open house in April, and encourage everyone to stop in!

Thank you for your support throughout the years and our move. We are looking forward to seeing you at our new office soon!
